Thomas Fischer is the Professor of Aged Care Nursing at Evangelische Hochschule Dresden- University of Applied Sciences (ehs), Dresden, Germany. In 2016 he was awarded an Endeavour Research Fellowship to collaborate with the Center of Cardiovascular and Chronic Care (CCCC), now Improving Palliative, Aged and Chronic Care through Clinical Research and Translation (IMPACCT), Faculty of Health, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he is currently Adjunct Professor.
Dr Fischer's main research focus is on pain in older persons. Research activities include the construction of instruments for pain assessment in older persons, especially those with dementia, and epidemiological studies on pain and pain management in nursing home settings. He contributed to the development of guidelines on the management of chronic pain and on pain assessment in long-term care. Together with IMPACCT at UTS he investigates how pain assessment in persons with delirium can be improved. Among other commitments, he is the chair of the German Pain Society's Special Interest Group on Pain in Older Persons and member of the German Pain Society's committee on health services research.
