Workshop on meta-analysis and meta-regression

Meta-analysis and meta-regression have become essential tools for researchers in diverse fields from biology and medicine to social sciences, engineering and more.
These powerful statistical techniques enable researchers to combine the results from a number of different studies, thereby providing more definitive insights as to whether certain conditions have particular effects.
Meta-analysis and meta-regression often lead to highly cited research publications that can change practice or the direction of future research. Because of this, some research funding bodies have now started demanding meta-analysis / meta-regression as a condition of awarding grants.

This two-day, hands-on workshop, with step-by-step instructions and a one-month trial licence for STATA software, aims to equip participants with the following:
• An understanding of the theoretical essentials of meta-analysis and meta-regression.
• Confidence and competency inuploading, arranging, and managing data sets for meta-analysis and meta-regression.
• Familiarity with simple coding in STATA, and the ability to run a meta-analysis / meta-regression relevant to the research question at hand.
• An understanding of how to identify sources of heterogeneity in the data.
• Confidence in graphing and reporting the data for publication.

In brief, this workshop aims to take the uncertainty, confusion, and angst out of meta-analysis and meta-regression, enabling participants to enjoy this essential research skill with ease and confidence.

Who is this workshop for?

Anyone who wishes to conduct (or supervise the conduct of) a meta-analysis (with or without meta-regression) to advance their research.
The workshop is open to researchers of all career stages and from any research institute or faculty.
Familiarity with use of spreadsheets such as Excel is essential.
As this is a hands-on practical workshop, it is best suited to those who already have a clear idea of the research question they wish to address with meta-analysis / meta-regression, and what kind of data they will be using. Sample data will be provided at the workshop, and it would be advantageous (but not essential) for participants to have their own data that can be analyzed at the workshop.


$450 plus GST ($495), including morning and afternoon tea on both days, plus a one-month license for STATA.

Lecture notes and instructions on how to download the required software (STATA) will be made available to course attendees via e-mail.

Course requirements

Essential: A laptop computer with which to perform meta-analysis and meta-regression at the workshop.

Desirable: A dataset of your accumulated data, and / or a previous meta-analysis that you have conducted.

About the tutors

With a Bachelor¹s Degree in Computer Engineering & Software and a Masters Degree in Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Reza Kahlaee has used big data to help ease some of the challenges of modern society. These include keeping transport systems running efficiently in large cities, and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of oil and gas refineries.

With funding from a competitive research scholarship, Reza is now applying his expertise in data handling to improve human health by investigating the long-term safety of various medication classes in his PhD at the University of Sydney (Pharmacy). He has conducted meta-analysis and meta-regression for four manuscripts (one of which is now published), and he has helped two other research teams to conduct meta-analysis and meta-regression for three additional manuscripts in preparation.

Most importantly as a tutor for this workshop, Reza has investigated the Œpros and cons¹ of the statistical techniques and software options available to researchers undertaking meta-analysis and meta-regression, and makes this information (as well as simple instructions on how to use the software) accessible to a wide variety of researchers including those that don¹t have a background in statistics and mathematics.

Professor Amanda Salis, PhD, is a full-time research scientist at the University of Sydney¹s Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise & Eating Disorders at the Charles Perkins Centre, funded by a competitive research fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Amanda trained as a basic researcher investigating animal models of obesity and novel obesity treatments. Seeking to translate knowledge from basic science into more direct benefits for human health, in 2012 she transitioned into clinical research, and now leads NHMRC-funded randomized controlled clinical trials of novel dietary obesity treatments. Meta-analysis has been a major contributor to her transition to clinical research, enabling Amanda and her team to more fully (and cheaply) assess ideas from basic research prior to expensive testing in humans.

Amanda is adept at researcher training, having helped over 1,000 early and middle career researchers in Australia, Norway, Saudia Arabia and Switzerland with her popular workshops on how to ŒGet your paper published¹, and how to ŒBlow your own trumpet¹ for fellowship and promotion applications.
